Un-Employed ?   First Aid

Five actions to de-stress unemployment and accelerate job seeking

1.  Contact your local unit leader

2.  Assess your qualifications by creating a profile at  www.ldsjobs.org

3.  Find government assistance at   http://www.benefits.gov and  http://www.usa.gov/benefits.

For example, here are some Colorado benefits:

·       Food Assistance Program

·       Medicaid

·       Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program

·       Colorado Works

·       Unemployment benefits

4.  Contact your state workforce center. Connect with their database to set up an account, create a profile, and have preferred job titles forwarded to you daily.

With an account and an uploaded current resume, employers can respond directly with job opportunities. Workforce center assistance may be available to improve your resume, networking, and interviewing.

Do a web search with your state name and ‘workforce center’.

5.  Contact your local and Stake Self-Reliance Service leaders for assistance with Pathway Education, Skills Training and Vocational Rehab.

Step-by-Step Structured Approach

Start-To-Finish:  A Core Curriculum

This entry on the Navigation Bar presents a plan for job seekers in six steps from career counseling through negotiating a permanent employment position.

The job search process includes the development of skills necessary for success. The job seeker may have various levels of competence; the improvement and refinement of skills are achieved by a cyclic process:  review and refine.

A flowchart is provided for this cyclic process.

For a structured job search, select  Start to Finish  in the navigation bar below.

Major Elements in a Job Search

  • Career Progress  Everyone starts a career and more importantly continues in one. This section assists in selecting and continuing a career, advancing & maintaining employment; and possibly making a decision to change careers.

  • Team Effort  Seeking a new job is a complex activity. For the newly un-employed it is a significant emotional stress. Assistance is available through local leaders, provided they are made aware. The self-reliance program can call on these resources as needed by candidates, advisors and leaders.

  • Learn & Refine  Five essential activities a job seeker needs to continuously engage in and perfect: developing an effective resume, creating a network and refining interview skills. This is an ongoing process of refinement.

  • Search and Submit  With a master resume in place the job seeker can search for available opportunities. Leads come through networking and online searches. The resume is tailored to match the candidate’s strengths and experience with the specific job requirements.

  • Interview  A resume should lead to an interview invitation. On short notice candidates must present an exemplary performance presenting skills and qualifications; and ask the right questions based on the job requirements

  • Assess Offer  If the interview and follow up meetings are successful an offer will be made. This in the employment process evaluates the offer and a decision to accept or reject. Negotiation skills are addressed in the resource material.
