Part 3: Other Creative Music Educator Web Sites For Ideas and Inspiration

Let's Find Suitable School Web Pages and School Music Web Pages:

1. Spot Light on Bands in all 50 states: http://www.schoolbands.com/

2. Elementary and Middel School General Music Web:

Interactive web sites:

  1. On-line tests:

Look for a new era in interactive web sites when software companies allow the music educator to post their program and/or training exercises on-line for instruction. so students can access the software 24/7. Thus creating a greater need for music technology to be in the mainstream of the music educator's curriculum. Datasonics of Australia has taken this lead which not only allows their customers with a site license to have the music notation/sequencing/music theory/ear training/film scoring application on-line 24/7 so their students can work on assignments at home. Because all of the lessons in Mastering Music are HTML pages, these can be placed on a school's website and the students can log in from home to complete Mastering Music lessons not completed during class time. This option is called Web Connect and is available to schools that have a Mastering Music Site License for only US$20.00 per student per year. The Mastering Music lessons and the Video Tutorials are loaded onto the school's secure website while the Music Master Professional application is loaded locally from a download from the school's website. With over 400 on-line tutorials, this application opens the door for greater use in the music education curriculum and with only one interface to learn for six different software application which is magical for the busy, over-worked music educator.

There are other manufacturers who are also opening this window of opportunity for 24/7 use by being able to post their exercises on-line.

  1. SmartMusic by MakeMusic is making significant impact in home performance practice and assessment as the mainstream of the school string, band, vocal music performance curriculum.
  2. Star Play is a competitor to SmartMusic with many on-line options for home performance practice and assessment. Click here for more details.
  3. Scorch by Sibelius now allows educators to quickly post notational compositions and exercises on the Internet for creative performance.
  4. Finale compositions and exercises can also be posted for playback, editing, and printing on the Internet through their free NotePad software.
  5. Ear Training 5 distributed by emediamusic which allows the teacher to post ear training exercises. EarMaster is made so teachers and students can easily share assignments and results through the Internet. This allows the students to work at home while the teacher still have the full overview of their results and progress. EarMaster uses emails to do this and we have chosen this technology through careful considerations (see the reasons later in this email).
    1. The teacher attaches the new tutor to an email that is sent to his students
    2. The student opens the tutor with EarMaster Pro on his private computer and works with the lessons.
    3. When the lessons are completed, the student chooses the export function "Email results and lessons". This function automatically exports all the results, compresses them in a zip file and attach the file to an email. Only action required by the student is to send the email!
    4. The teacher receives emails from all his students. He drags the attached file to his desktop (to create it as a file), then he drags the file into the import window of EarMaster and click import. That is all, then this users data is in his system and he can use all the advanced statistical features in EarMaster to track the progress and compare the results for all his students.
    5. To allow the students to have EarMaster Pro at home we have made the special "Home User Site" license. This is a site license purchased by the school (or band) that allows all students/members to install EarMaster Pro on their home computer.

Thoughts and considerations about web based ear training
Here are my thought about web based ear training and what considerations we have made, regarding web abilities, during the development of the latest EarMaster release.

I see two categories of web-based ear training:
Ear training tools that runs from the web page in a browser window.
    1) We have considered this for EarMaster, but my opinion is that it does not work good enough with the current state of technology. For a free tool to use once a while it might be acceptable, but for a teaching situation and when you work seriously with ear training it does not work well. A web based tool works too slow and does not offer the interactivity found in a real program installed on the computer.

    2) Ear training tools that are installed as a program on the local computer, and only the assignments and results are shared through the internet.

EarMaster belongs to this category and it uses emails to do this. Our first thought was to use a server on the web to store all user data (assignments, results and settings) - but after careful considerations we decided to use emails to exchange data. The email support is integrated into EarMaster as it automatically exports the results, compresses them in a zip file and attach the file to an email.

    Using email has several advantages:

    a) Easy to understand and use.
All computer users are already familiar with emails to exchange information. Very little instruction is needed and in addition each user avoids the trouble setting the computer up to connect to a server.

    b) No problems with firewalls
In these days with hackers constantly looking for holes in the security, a typical computer connects to the internet through several levels of firewalls. Usually there is a software firewall on the local computer and a firewall at the router that connects the local network with the internet. Each firewall has to be configured to open the right port so the data can go through. Using emails is an advantages here because all firewalls are already configured to allow emails to go through.

    c) Does not require that you have permanent internet connection
If the program should retrieve and store its data on a remote web server it would require that you have a permanent internet connection. Permanent internet connections become more and more common, but there are still many modem users. With emails you control when you the data is exchanged and when to connect to the internet.

    d) Fail safe
No problems with the server going down.
