Web Design Class Schedule

Monday

- Survey students as to the extent of their current knowledge about designing and implementing a web page.
- What do students hope to achieve over the 3 class days.
- Begin instruction in Dreamweaver book
(Students who already have prior knowledge and feel comfortable working at their own pace are welcome to do so.)

- Discuss final project possibilities and requirements
** See final project module below **
- Survey students to find what modules interest them the most and how they would be implemented in the final project (and in their teaching strategy.)
- Based on survey, begin lecture/discussion of technology modules.


Tuesday Morning

- Address any specific issues/questions students have about a particular technology, it's use, or it's integration.
- Integration of multimedia
A) Adding still images
B) Overview of graphic editing applications
     (Photoshop/GraphicConverter/Picasa/Aviary/Karbon/Gimp/Drawings)
C) Raster (Photoshop) vs. Vector (Illustrator)
D) Implementation of Video (streaming/download/embed/Flash/HTML5)
E) Overview of video editing applications
     (Final Cut Express and Studio/iMovie/Windows Movie Maker/VideoSpin/MDG5/Jahshaka/Wax/Premeire)

Tuesday Afternoon
- Students work at own pace and begin final project -


Wednesday

A) Overview of multimedia & collaboration
- Voki
- Xtranormal
- JavaScript based games & tests
- Online calendars (calendars.net/assignaday)
- Wiki sites (pbworks.com)
B) Hosting a website
C) Domain names & where to get them (godaddy.com/dyndns.com)
D) Students continue work on final project
E) Students complete final project in early afternoon so everyone can tour each site


Dreamweaver Module

A) Linear vs. Non-linear Design
B) Site content (what is your site going to be about??)
C) Use of JPG (pictures)/GIF (graphics & graphical animation)/PNG (designed to replace GIF)
D) Start Dreamweaver - Start New Site (pg. 8)
E) HTML vs. GUI Design
F) Understanding basic HTML tags
     - open/close tags
     - html/head/title/body/bgcolor/center/hr/br/font/size/color/
G) Begin editing text
H) Cascading Style Sheets (CSS) - internal vs. external
     - Only editing using menus - not programming code manually
I) Adding links & anchors
J) Other web design software
- MS Word (win only - NOT RECOMMENDED!!!)

- TextEdit (mac only - NOT RECOMMENDED!!!)

Final Project Modules

1) Final project will consist of at least 5 individual web pages (either linear or non-linear)
2) Students will include at least 5 of the following technologies in their site:
     A) Video file (either embeded or linked to another site)
      -Videos may be in the form of a video podcast, voki, xtranormal, series of screen captures, QuickTime file, etc.-
     B) Blog (hosted by one of many free sites)
     C) Audio file (either a narration recorded live, an audio file from another source, audio podcast, or audio dubbed
          over a video podcast)
     D) Online Calendar (hosted by a variety of free sites)
     E) JavaScript exercise (ie. game, test, etc.)
     F) Wikispace (create a virtual environment for student to collaborate on a project. Free sites available (ie.
          pbworks.com)
     G) PDF (create a PDF file to distribute online)

** If the students have access to a web host, they can FTP their site to the host, then create a free account at dyndns.com to create a domain name for their new site. **
