Internet Introduction/Tutorials

The Internet assignments involve using Firefox by Mozilla or Microsoft Explorer. The purpose of this Internet instruction is in surfing the Internet with search engines. Fortunately, the Jefferson Country Schools home page has about 18+ quality search engines that can be found on their home page at: http://204.98.1.1./connections

To log on the Internet, you are to go to your computer's desktop after you boot up. This is the screen that has all the program icons waiting for you. But first, you must log onto your computer as your own name with your own password.! Fortunately, all Pentium computers and the Gateway 2000 computer in the PC Lab are connected to the school district's T1 line for the Internet. Because we have only 20 computers connected to the Internet, we will need to double up with partners with about 7 to 10 students working together. Everybody else is to continue working at their individual workstation with the Internet assignments.

Search Hints:

Whenever searching for specific topics, just type in the key word for what you are looking for. However, when searching for a topic with two or more words, you must put quotation marks before and after the last words. For example: Denver Broncos should be typed in as follows: "Denver Broncos" Without the quotation marks, you will search for everything on the Internet that has Denver and also for everything that has Broncos. The result is that you will have hundreds of thousands of web sites to read!

Whenever you do a search with two or more references, put AND in between the two different key words. This allows you to do a compound search on the Internet, making it much easier to find difficult topics fast on the Internet. For example, searching for Dr. Data on the Internet, it is better to do a compound search as follows: "John Kuzmich, Jr." AND "educator." Note: not all search engines will find the same information. Consequently, you may have to use several different search engines to find Dr. Data! InfoSeek and HotBot search engines have many entries for Dr. Data but some others do not.

Optional Australian E-mail Assignments:

Optional e-mail letters sent from the Australian school e-mail account to friends, schoolmates, relatives and/or parents between November and December for first semester and April to May for second semester classes. Each e-mail must have eight quality sentences on a designated editorial topic in a CSAP format. 25 extra credit points can be earned daily which goes into your gradebook.
