Dear 7th & 8th Dr. Data Computer Class Parents:
"The Very Last Week of the Grading Period!!!"
Here are some tips for your perusal to also assist both students and parents as we go into the final week of the grading period.
- This coming week is the last week of this grading period. Time to fix whatever needs fixing! See Parent-Portal for details of what's missing or needs makeup.
- Parent-Student-Teacher conferences are taking place this coming Thursday, February 26th from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. When a student brings one of their parents to meet with Dr. Data, they can earn a floating 'A" worth 20 bonus points!
- On Carmody's Parent-Portal, be aware that sometimes Dr. Data gives more than one day for an assignment while most of the time one day. Basically assignments should be completely weekly so makeup work does not become excessive. And don't look at completion days as absolute as students can still finish work at home and submit without a late penalty with a parent signature and date of completion.
- Hope the "M" (Missing Grades) grades are disappearing for our upcoming Parent-Student-Teacher conferences this coming Thursday evening? If not, student work is strongly encouraged after school daily in the PC Lab Monday through Friday between 2:15 and 3 p.m. But please make appointments for Monday, Wednesday and Fridays with Dr. Data since there are faculty meetings periodically.
- Be aware that students' missing assignments are not graded because...
- They print sometimes to the wrong printer.
- They forget to pick up their printed assignments and eventually, they get lost in that Dr. Data never sees it to be graded
- Sometimes, students forget to put their names of their submitted assignments.
- Sometimes but rarely, Dr. Data just didn't entry the grade correctly.
- Solutions for assignments not being credited/graded?
- Save ones assignments many times during a class period so one can always show it to Dr. Data again.
- Always save before printing just in the case the computer should crash
- Save all returned completed assignments in the student notebook so the student has proof that it was done.
- If assignments are completed at home, simple reprint them and show to Dr. Data the next day in class along with a parent signature and date completed verifying that your child did the work themselves.
- 7th Grade Classes: Final project for the 7th grade word processing unit is the Korean Penpal letter. It is a 400-point two-part pen pal letter assignment to a Korean student in Seoul, Korea which will be due in either this coming week on Friday, February 27, 2009 with the preliminary one-page draft and Friday, March 6, 2009 with the final copy of two pages double spaced type. See separate hand-out dealing with Penpal instructions. Penpal instructions. All students were given the same work sheet two weeks ago. Students can work on this final project at home or in class or both. That's why the thumb drives are so important making it possible to work seamlessly with hesitation whenever they have time to work on this final project. Note: preliminary draft can be either handwritten or typed but the final version of March 6, 2009 has to be typed two pages, double spaced. Suggest parents checking the Korean Penal for typos, sentence syntax, grammar and the use of topic sentences in each paragraph. This is CSAP quality of the first order! Good luck with your child achieving word processing and CSAP expertise! Dr. Data will give his 7th grade classes some time on this Wednesday and Thursday to work especially on their pen pal letters and on Friday as well.
We are now into the Word Processing unit for the next four weeks, but you will also have extra-credit opportunities to make posters/banners for your favorite teacher at Carmody whenever they finish the day's assignment. We just completed assignment number 10. Each assignment has learning objectives listed.
- 8th Grade Classes: We will continue doing Internet search engine assignments on Week 6A. This second week we are learning to expand ones abilities with Internet search engines. There's no substitute for being Internet savvy in being able to find information so you can promote your business better. Assignments for this week to be completed with individual worksheets to be completed by using the Internet. Dr. Data will provide them.

Learning Objectives:
- Learning the meaning of global addresses by finding global addresses on the Internet.
- Using the up, down, back, and forward arrows on the keypad.
- Learning Internet terms such as Web site, home page, Internet browser, etc.
- Drawing boxes and lines
- Typing facts in boxes and adjusting box size
- Typing a specific global address and finding the site.
Special note for 8th grade classes. Because there's a school district rule about no audio devices, there can be no student cell phone with camera capabilities, iPods, headphone and/or MP3 players at all in our 8th grade computer classes. Students now have only two choices to bring artwork for their multimedia projects: digital cameras or bring the pictures and videos on a thumb drive or e-mail them to themselves and they can open up the e-mail with attached files. Multimedia may have problems fitting on a floppy diskette.
