Meet John Kuzmich, Jr.!



Dr. John Kuzmich, Jr. is a music educator of 30+ years with specialties in jazz education, music education and computer music applications. For the past six years, Dr. Kuzmich teaches computer education at Carmody Middle School in Lakewood, Colorado plus operates a private music studio practice with 25+ students per week. His marching and concert bands have won five gold medals at international and state band contests and his jazz groups have been featured at a MENC National Convention. His formal education includes a Ph.D. degree in music education with an emphasis in comprehensive musicianship from Brigham Young University, plus post doctorate studies in curriculum development, electronic music, wind ensemble literature, music computers, human relations, administrative and jazz education from such institutions as Eastman School of Music, University of Illinois, Syracuse University, Indiana University and others. Dr. Kuzmich has been listed in "Men of Achievement" and "Who's Who in International Music Education." As a co-author with Dr. Lee Bash, Dr. Kuzmich has written three landmark jazz pedagogy texts for public school educators and college method classes published by Warner Brothers. These books deal with how to develop a big-band program, how to teach improvisation and how to develop a combo/improvisation program.

Dr. Kuzmich has served as Senior Editor for the Jazz Educators Journal, The Instrumentalist and the American Suzuki Journal with over 15 years of experience. In addition, he has been extensively published in numerous journals with 200+ articles including a number of feature articles published in the Music Educators Journal, down beat and many other prestigious music education journals. As a frequent clinician, he regularly presents workshops at international, national, regional, state and local conventions and clinics which have included workshop presentations for the following national organizations: International Association of Jazz Educators, National Association of Music Merchants, National Education Association, International Society for Technology in Education, Music Educators National Conference, Mid West Band & Orchestra Clinic and clinic presentations at over 40 colleges and universities. Dr. Kuzmich is also a desktop publishing/telecommunications computer clinician for Epson America, Hewlett-Packer, Hayes Microcomputers, Aldus Corporation, Adobe Systems, Caere Corporation, Expervision, Delrina Corporation, Prodigy, Symantec Corporation and WordPerfect Corporation and a beta tester for Lotus Development Corporation and Aldus Corporation and nearly all of the major music software companies (Coda Music, Passport Designs, Musitek and others) and Yamaha International, Advanced Gravis, and Creative Labs for computer music hardware. Most recently, the National Association of Music Merchants has commissioned Dr. Bash and Dr. Kuzmich to conduct a national study entitled: "Computer Music Sales: Understanding the Music Educator."

1996 Events

In the summer of 1996, Dr. Kuzmich presented four days workshops at Pulawy Jazz Clinic in Poland and a one-week college level computer music workshop in Denver, Colorado for music educators. In the fall of 1996, Dr. Kuzmich presented a one-day forum for the School of Music at the University of Southern California and four one-hour presentations at the 1996 Classroom Connect National Internet Conference on computer music and telephony on the Internet in Disneyland in Anaheim, California.

1997 Events

Maintained my "Watch Out" and "New Teaching Materials" columns in every issue of the Jazz Educators Journal. At the 1997 International convention held in Chicago for the International Association of Jazz Educators, he presented a computer music workshop dealing with software applications. At the 1997 Brigham Young University Jazz Festival, John was an adjudicator along with two 1-hour presentations on jazz applications on the Internet and a two-hour workshop dealing with "wire" choir. At the 1997 TIE (Technology in Education) Conference in June, 1997 in Aspen, Colorado, he gave two workshops entitled: "Video Conferencing" and "Everything You Need to Know about Computer Music Software/Hardware." On May 17, 1997, a jazz educators workshop will be given for music educators at Meramec Community College in Kirkwood, Missouri, sponsored by St. Ann's Music Service. In June, 1997, Dave Mejia and John Kuzmich, Jr. again teamed up and present a comprehensive one-week workshop on computer music for Jefferson County Public Schools with college credit offerred by Colorado Christian University. Lee Bash and John began planning a fourth book for Warner Bros. that deals with performance application for the college music methodology class or as a warmup book material for the middle/high school jazz band class. The latest book written by John is Music Web Guide: Instant Access to the Best Internet Web Sites, published by Classroom Connect. John presented a one-hour video conferencing presentation at the Tel-'Ed '97 Conference in Austin, Texas in November as well as a computer music workshop for graduate students at the University of Texas at Austin. The Tel-Ed conference is the largest international telecommunications educator conference in the world.

1998 Events

John started out the year with a bang with two workshops at the NAMM '98 Show at the Los Angeles Convention Center in January.  The topics were video conferencing and computer music applications/resources.  Upcoming published articles include several "wired" string articles for the new School Band & Orchestra magazine as well as for his "Watch Out" and "New Teaching Materials" columns in every issue of the Jazz Educators Journal. A feature article on the Modern String Quartet of Munich, Germany will soon be presented in the Jazz Educators Journal.  An other feature article in the works is the history of Polish Jazz Education as interviewed with Pawel Brodowski, senior editor of the Jazz Forum.  At the 1998 NECC Conference in San Diego in June, he will give a three-hour preconference workshop on video conference.  At the 1998 Brigham Young University Jazz Festival,John was a clinician all-day with computer music applications and resources.  In February and June, 1988, Dave Mejia and John Kuzmich, Jr. again teamed up and present three comprehensive 32-hour workshops on computer music for Jefferson County Public Schools with college credit offerred by Chapman University.  Robert Waggoner and John are now working together on a fourth book for Warner Bros. that deals with performance application for the college music methodology class or as a warmup book material for the middle/high school jazz band class.

Again in July, 1998, Dr. Kuzmich organized several computer music and jazz education workshop presentations at the Pulway, Poland Jazz Festival for five days and at the Conservatory of Music in Kiev, Ukraine.  John spent a total of 34 days in eastern Europe with his family performing six concerts in six countries in six different languages:  Munich, Germany, Ljubljana, Slovenia, Budapest, Hungary, Kiev, Ukraine, Moscow, Russia and Warsaw, Poland.

On October 27, 1998, a thirty-minute videoconferencing demonstration will be presented for networking adminstrators of Jefferson County Public Schools in Golden, Colorado. The Jefferson County School District is the largest school district in the State of Colorado with over 89,000 students. On November 11, 12, and 13, 1998, three videoconferencing workshops will be given at the Classroom Connect Conference at the Disneland Hotel in Anaheim, California. This event is the largest educator Internet conference in the country. Two of these workshops are half-day workshops.
